I’ve lived in Newfoundland for 20 years now, and attending The Gathering Festival in Burlington, NL last weekend...
Are you from the Burin Peninsula (or simply love it here)? If so, I need your help! Those of you who know me well know that I’m not only a traveler, but I’m also very passionate about the tourism industry. While on vacation in St. John’s last month, I had a conversation with tourists from Texas and Alberta (all first time visitors to Newfoundland), and when they described their extensive island-wide itineraries, I learned that neither of them had heard of the Burin Peninsula. Even when I told them about St. Pierre et Miquelon, they admitted it was never on the radar in their planning. Sadly, I bet many of you have experienced moments like this as well.
This is a problem. This is a problem because the Burin Peninsula is amazing and we have so much to offer tourists to this area. I mean, we have more to offer than a hotel room to sleep in the night before you go to St. Pierre, for those tourists who have heard about it. This is not a problem that is going to get fixed overnight, but I believe if we work together, we can jump start the process. We don’t need millions of dollars to start a conversation about why we think other people will love it here just as much as we do.
Personally, I want to do my part to get people talking about the Burin Peninsula. Over the next year, I’d like to feature profiles of businesses, videos of quintessential sightseeing spots, glimpses into off-the-beaten path places that everyone should visit, guides to annual events that we host, and itineraries for people who decide that what they are reading is worth checking out for themselves.
However, I can’t do this alone. First of all, you can help out by sharing this post. The more people we reach, the better the outcome of the project. But ultimately, I’d love it if you commented and let me know any of the following:
- Your favourite spot to bring visitors and what’s so great about it.
- Recommend spots I’d never know to visit and tell me why I need to go there.
- Tag businesses that you think tourists would love so I can make a list.
- Reach out to me if you’re connected to one of these businesses/places and would like to arrange a visit!
- Reach out to me if you’d like to have a conversation about ways I can further along this project.
